‎What Our Families Say

Mum is so much more active and is busy going on outings, joining in using her walker, things that were not happening previously. Highly recommend.

How does
Convalescent & Rehabilitation Care Work?

Convalescent care is a temporary, short-term stay in a care home, designed to support individuals who need time and professional care to recover after surgery, illness, or injury. It’s ideal for those who no longer need acute medical care at hospital, but still need continued expert care and support before returning to their own home.

At Water Mill House, we offer convalescent care with an emphasis on personalised support, in a luxurious environment where people can relax, recuperate, and regain their strength. Our experienced team, led by our clinical manager, is on hand 24/7 to provide bespoke nursing care to manage pain, and physiotherapy to promote strength and mobility to support independence. As well as providing gentle assistance with daily needs, laundry, and meals.

Convalescent care is particularly beneficial for adults who are transitioning from hospital to home but still need medical attention and specialist support. Water Mill House is designed to support those recovering from surgery, illness or injury who require short-term professional care to rebuild confidence and aid their effective recovery.

At Water Mill House Care Home, our priority is ensuring that each person has the support and resources they need to recover as fully as possible. Whilst giving families peace of mind that everything is taken care of. For more information, please contact our kind, expert team to discuss how we can help you or your loved one on the road to recovery.

Our rehabilitation care is suitable for adults (aged 18 or above) who have experienced a physical injury or illness and require intensive support to regain their strength, mobility, and independence.

This includes specialist care for neurological conditions, such as multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, Parkinson’s disease and stroke, or following orthopaedic surgery for a limb amputation, or a knee or hip replacement. Expert rehabilitation includes physical therapy to build stamina, occupational therapy for mobility and self-care, and speech and language therapy, where needed, to aid communication.

We provide a range of support for adults recovering from surgeries, such as orthopaedic procedures, or serious injuries. We recognise that each person’s recovery is unique and take time to get to know each person, to understand their needs and goals to ensure they have a personalised recovery plan that suits them. This is regularly reviewed with access to specialist equipment, clinical expertise, personalised training plans and bedside wellness activities.

Activities
Tailored to You

We organise daily activities and entertainment for everyone in our care. This includes art therapy, music and movement, mindfulness, and fun quizzes and games. As well as popular Knit and Natter, Saturday ramble and gardening clubs that keep people connected to their passions and taking pride in their accomplishments.

Holistic bedside therapies are an integral part of our care too. Creating trusting relationships with caregivers and a safe space to enjoy massage, pampering and Namaste Care to enhance wellbeing.

We enjoy regular visits from performers, therapy animals and schoolchildren, including our Duke of Edinburgh youth volunteers, who uplift with their energy and enthusiasm. Each week we also explore new and varied places of interest on our private minibus, from local tea rooms to historical sites.

We host a weekly resident forum, and monthly relatives meeting to share feedback and ideas to shape our services. These are streamed to give everyone the chance to participate.

Friends & Families Are Always Welcome

We extend this same care to our families, who are always welcome, day and night. Visitors can join for a meal, an activity session, or take part in our many celebrations throughout the year. Their feedback is encouraged after each visit, with invites to regular update meetings hosted by our manager. Our team is always on hand to listen and offer advice whenever you need us.

Our luxurious home is purpose-built and includes stunning spaces for residents and their loved ones to enjoy. From our private dining room, which can be hired for special events, to the cinema and salon, Water Mill House provides a welcoming environment in which to create precious memories.

Meet Our Physiotherapist

My job is to ensure that everyone benefits from a personalised training plan to improve their strength, balance and mobility. I run private sessions in the fitness suite, and group classes throughout the week to keep residents motivated and engaged. This is complemented with wellness activities, daily entertainment and around the clock support with personal care. Water Mill House provides the ideal setting for recuperation.

Making Dreams Come True

Our Wishing Well initiative runs throughout the year to create personalised experiences for our residents to treasure. We believe it’s never too late to fulfil long-held dreams, and encourage everyone to participate.  Often, it’s the little things that mean the most, from growing a bumper crop of tomatoes for David, a former Spitalfields barrow boy, to arranging a champagne birthday tea for Queenie and her family. No matter how big or small, we love the challenge of creating these special moments for everyone in our care.

The Wishing Well  Experiences to Treasure

Linda

Let’s Go Fly a Kite

Linda fondly remembered flying kites with her father as a little girl. Armed with supplies, we took to the skies at Dunstable Down. Linda said: “Although it was almost 70 years since I’d done it, the memories came flooding back and it was so much fun!”

Romayne

Keeping En Pointe!

Professional dancer Romayne yearned to watch a ballet again. So, we arranged a special visit to the Bovingdon Dance Academy to watch rehearsals. Romayne said: “It means the world to me that I can continue my love for dance at Water Mill House.”

David

Bumper Harvest

David worked at Spitalfields and longed to rekindle his love of gardening. So, we ensured he had everything he needed to produce a bumper summer crop. David said: “I’m delighted with what I’ve been able to grow at Water Mill House!”

🍩✨ WISH WEDNESDAY COMES AROUND WITH A BAKER’S TALE! ✨🍩

This weeks wish took us on a delicious trip down memory lane… with a jam-filled detour! 😋

Ruth remembered Simmons Bakers very well. Her father-in-law lived next door to Reg Simmons in Hatfield, and after his shifts, Reg would often bring home trays of leftover cakes to share with Ruth’s family. ❤️

And Ruth’s favourite? The classic jam doughnut, of course! 🍩❤️
Soft, sweet, tempting… and absolutely FULL of jam! 😂

It’s been over 15 years since Ruth’s last visit, so we thought it was time to bring back a little taste of the past.

A delicious doughnut, a lovely cuppa ☕️ and a whole lot of happy memories. Sometimes the simplest treats are the sweetest! 🥰

🍩 Jam today, memories forever! 🍩

We headed over to the Community Café at Nash Mills Village Hall and what a lovely welcome we had! 🥰

A warm cuppa ☕, a lovely slice of cake 🍰, plenty of chatting, a fun quiz 🧠 and, of course… we couldn’t leave without a raffle! 🎟️🎉

And Jean clearly had her lucky socks on… 🧦🍀 FIRST OUT AND A WINNING TICKET! 🏆😂

A wonderful afternoon of friendship, laughter and community spirit. ❤️

🌾👀 SCARECROWS HERE, SCARECROWS THERE… SCARECROWS EVERYWHERE! 👀🌾

The Scarecrow Festival 2026 had arrived… and Water Mill House joined in! 🎉

Our residents got creative and made scarecrows representing their past professions — can you match the scarecrow to the resident? 🤔🧑‍🌾👩‍🍳👨‍🔧👩‍🏫

We proudly renamed ours “Care-Crows” and they were on show at St Mary’s Church, Apsley ⛪🌾

And it seems our straw filled friends made quite an impression… the Vicar absolutely loved our entry! ❤️👏

🌾 Care-Crows: standing telling our stories! 🌾
