What is Nursing Care?
At Water Mill House we provide compassionate, expert nursing care tailored to each resident’s unique needs. Led by a clinical manager, Victoria, with over 30 years’ nursing experience, our highly-trained team is available around the clock. This ensures that residents receive attentive clinical care, day and night.
We specialise in caring for adults (aged 18+) with a wide range of medical conditions, including stroke recovery, heart and lung disease, Parkinson’s disease, bariatric care, muscular dystrophy, and multiple sclerosis. This includes kind and discreet catheter care, bowel care and clinical care for residents with feeding tubes (PEG, nasogastric and jejunostomy).
Every resident has a detailed, personalised care plan created and regularly reviewed, in partnership with them and their loved ones. This collaborative approach ensures that all medical, emotional, and social needs are fully met, and aligned with the residents’ values and preferences.
Clinical Expertise
Our team proactively monitors residents and responds swiftly and effectively to any changes in their condition. We work closely and effectively with community care partners to prevent unnecessary hospital admissions.
We have a retained GP who conducts weekly visits to review care plans and medication. Our physiotherapist, Danny, supports recovery by creating personalised plans to build strength, balance and mobility – delivering sessions in groups and 1-to-1 settings.
We use specialist equipment to further support comfort and independence. This includes profile beds, airflow mattresses, hoists, and mobility aids. These adaptations are especially valuable for residents who are nursed in bed to feel part of our vibrant community. At Water Mill House, we are dedicated to helping each resident to live each day with dignity, comfort, and joy.

Activities Tailored to you
Residents enjoy access to a range of beautiful wheelchair accessible spaces including our welcoming bistro, cinema, salon and gardens. We host daily activities, clubs and entertainment designed to encourage engagement and connection. Each week residents explore new and varied places of interest on our private minibus, from local tearooms to historical sites.
Holistic therapies are an integral part of our nursing care. These are provided in the comfort and privacy of a resident’s bedroom. Creating trusting relationships with caregivers and a safe space to enjoy music, massage, pet therapy, pampering and Namaste Care to enhance wellbeing.
We host a weekly resident forum, and monthly relatives’ meeting to share feedback and ideas to shape our services. We stream these meetings to give everyone the chance to participate.
Making Dreams Come True
Our Wishing Well initiative runs throughout the year to create personalised experiences for our residents to treasure. We believe it’s never too late to fulfil long-held dreams, and encourage everyone to participate. Often, it’s the little things that mean the most, from growing a bumper crop of tomatoes for David, a former Spitalfields barrow boy, to arranging a champagne birthday tea for Queenie and her family. No matter how big or small, we love the challenge of creating these special moments for everyone in our care.

Let’s Go Fly a Kite
Linda fondly remembered flying kites with her father as a little girl. Armed with supplies, we took to the skies at Dunstable Down. Linda said: “Although it was almost 70 years since I’d done it, the memories came flooding back and it was so much fun!”
Water Mill House Still have questions?
Deciding when to move a loved one to a care home is never easy. Often, the right time comes when symptoms significantly affect daily living, safety and wellbeing.
If your loved one is due to be discharged from hospital and requires ongoing nursing care, as a family you may be given a short timeframe in which to find a suitable nursing home. Family members, alongside healthcare professionals, play a key role in this decision. A care assessment will then be carried out by the prospective nursing home to confirm they can meet your loved one’s needs.
Choosing the right care home
Choosing the right care home is one of life’s most important decisions. We recommend first shortlisting homes that provide the nursing care your loved one needs, before arranging visits. Our guide will help you navigate your care journey with ease.
A nursing home provides medical care 24 hours a day, delivered by registered nurses. They care for individuals who have significant health needs, and provide specialist care and equipment to manage these conditions effectively.
Nursing care includes access to physical and occupational therapies to support dignity, independence and wellbeing. The clinical team is supported by carers who provide practical assistance with washing and dressing.
Residential care is provided by carers, rather than nurses. It is suitable for individuals who are looking for companionship in later life and help with daily tasks. Whilst this may include support with taking medication, it isn’t the acute clinical care you find in a nursing care home. Both types of care homes should provide enrichment opportunities, accessible activities and home-cooked meals.
Whilst some care homes will specialise in one type of care others, like ours, are multi-disciplinary, caring for residents with a range of residential, nursing and dementia care needs. This often means as someone’s health changes and their care needs increase, we’re able to provide the continuing care they need.
Many individuals will be required to self-fund their care if they have sufficient savings or assets. We recommend getting independent guidance from a Society of Later Life Advisers (SOLLA) accredited financial advisor.
At Water Mill House, we have worked with Eldercare Group for a number of years. They work across the whole care home market, and are able to give you free, impartial advice. To speak to one of their advisers, call 0800 082 1155 or watch the webinar from Managing Director Nicky Cave explaining everything you need to know about care funding.
Friends & Families Are Always Welcome
We extend this same care to our families, who are always welcome, day and night. Visitors can join for a meal, an activity session, or take part in our many celebrations throughout the year. Their feedback is encouraged after each visit, with invites to regular update meetings hosted by our manager. Our team is always on hand to listen and offer advice whenever you need us.
Our luxurious home is purpose-built and includes stunning spaces for residents and their loved ones to enjoy. From our private dining room, which can be hired for special events, to the cinema and salon, Water Mill House provides a welcoming environment in which to create precious memories.
