Personalised Residential Care

Set over three floors with stunning countryside views, our vibrant residential community features beautiful en-suite bedrooms, many with private gardens. Residents enjoy unlimited access to all communal areas including the bistro, cinema, gym, salon, and landscaped gardens.

Our friendly, expert team – many of whom have been with us since we opened in 2014 – understand our residents exceptionally well. We take time to get to know each person, to learn their needs, wishes and preferences. Using this detailed insight, we develop a personalised care plan that meets their physical, emotional and wellbeing needs.

Our ethos is simple: this is our residents’ home, and we are privileged to be welcomed by them every day. Residents choose how, and with whom, they spend their days, including where they dine. Room service is available for those preferring a quieter mealtime experience. Special occasions can be celebrated in the private dining room, with catering from our in-house chef.

‎What Our Families Say

This is a very caring care home. It has a very warm and welcoming atmosphere. We arranged for a family get-together in the private dining room. The service was excellent and the food was so delicious. It was a happy and relaxed occasion. 5-star food!

Elizabeth

Resident’s Wife

We came to Water Mill House to have lunch with my brother. We were greeted and met with great courtesy and had a coffee in the Bistro. The ambiance was lovely and the staff were friendly and helpful. Lunch was wonderful, tasty and beautifully presented. Our experience was very positive and I feel my brother is in excellent hands.

Mike

Resident’s brother

The staff, management and facilities are superb, giving me peace of mind. The team go the extra mile to look after the residents and families. I could not think of a better place for Mum, she really feels safe and happy. I highly recommend.

Peter

Resident’s son

Every time I have visited my mother, I have found her to be happy and well cared for. There is always something going on and the staff encourage the residents to be involved. I would recommend the Water Mill House to anyone as they genuinely do care.

Pamela

Resident’s daughter

The care home is well decorated, clean and tidy. The staff are very helpful, smiley and kind. Always trying to get the residents involved in numerous activities, including outside of the care home. Very well run.

Accessible activities Tailored to you

We host a weekly resident forum to continually listen to and shape our services to meet the diverse needs of our residents. This empowers residents to choose the activities that are important to them and ensures lifestyle options are responsive and inclusive.

We organise a varied daily entertainment and wellness activities schedule to suit all tastes and abilities. This includes art therapy, strength and balance training, pampering, pet therapy and Namaste Care. Not forgetting our popular Knit and Natter, Saturday ramble and gardening clubs that keep residents connected to their passions and taking pride in their accomplishments.

We host regular performances and group events, such as visits from our Duke of Edinburgh youth volunteers. While 1-2-1 activity and therapy sessions can be arranged in the comfort of someone’s room, or one of our quieter spaces such as our library or in the gym. We love to explore local attractions each week on our private minibus, from tea rooms to historical sites.

Do you need care for yourself or a loved one?

Making Dreams Come True

Our Wishing Well initiative runs throughout the year to create personalised experiences for our residents to treasure. We believe it’s never too late to fulfil long-held dreams, and encourage everyone to participate.  Often, it’s the little things that mean the most, from growing a bumper crop of tomatoes for David, a former Spitalfields barrow boy, to arranging a champagne birthday tea for Queenie and her family. No matter how big or small, we love the challenge of creating these special moments for everyone in our care.

The Wishing Well  Experiences to Treasure

Linda

Let’s Go Fly a Kite

Linda fondly remembered flying kites with her father as a little girl. Armed with supplies, we took to the skies at Dunstable Down. Linda said: “Although it was almost 70 years since I’d done it, the memories came flooding back and it was so much fun!”

Romayne

Keeping En Pointe!

Professional dancer Romayne yearned to watch a ballet again. So, we arranged a special visit to the Bovingdon Dance Academy to watch rehearsals. Romayne said: “It means the world to me that I can continue my love for dance at Water Mill House.”

David

Bumper Harvest

David worked at Spitalfields and longed to rekindle his love of gardening. So, we ensured he had everything he needed to produce a bumper summer crop. David said: “I’m delighted with what I’ve been able to grow at Water Mill House!”

How does Residential Care Work?

At its heart, a residential care home ensures comfort, dignity, and a sense of community in later life. Residential care includes accommodation, meals, and support with daily tasks such as washing, dressing, and taking medication.

Enriching activities, entertainment, and companionship are also provided. Residential care can reduce the stress of trying to care for someone in their own home and keep them safe, providing peace of mind and the ability to enjoy quality time together again.

Family and friends are a vital part of life at Water Mill House, and we welcome them with open arms at any time. Visitors can enjoy a meal, take part in an activity, or simply pop by for a cuppa and a chat. They also regularly join us for many wonderful parties and events each year.

We are here to support family members as much as our cherished residents. We’re always on hand to answer any questions you may have, or to update you as to how your loved one is getting on. Our monthly resident and relative update meetings are streamed to give everyone an opportunity to share feedback and ideas, whilst our carer events provide professional advice on things such as funding care and understanding dementia.

We are proud to also be able to provide dementia carenursing carerespite care, and day care within our home. This provides flexibility, whether you’d prefer a short-term stay whilst you get to know us, or as someone’s needs change over time.

When to Consider
A Care Home

Whether you are planning ahead or need to find care urgently, a care home might be the best option if:

  • You or your loved one struggles to live in their home, or feels increasingly isolated, even with the support of friends, family, or paid carers.
  • A needs assessment suggests that residential care is the most appropriate solution.
  • Complex medical conditions require specialist attention day and night.

Residential care can significantly reduce the stress of trying to care for a loved one in their own home. With this peace of mind, you’ll rediscover quality time together.

Understanding the different Types of Care Home

At Water Mill House in Hemel Hempstead, we care for residents with a range of residential, nursing and dementia care needs. This differs from other care homes which specialise in only one type of care. This often means that as someone’s health changes, we’re able to provide the continuing care they require.

🚂💨 SSSSSSTEAM WISH WEDNESDAY! 💨🚂

This weeks is Alan’s wish really got up a head of steam as he was reunited with his beloved Cowslip! ❤️

Cowslip is a working model replica of an 1899 steam car, known as a Locomobile, and what a rare little beauty she is! 🌟

Alan meticulously assembled her over several years from a kit supplied by Steam Traction World — with only 30 kits released worldwide! 😲 Making Cowslip a very special and rare piece indeed.

Weighing in at just under a tonne, she has been lovingly painted with help from Alan’s daughter Clare and grandson Joshua. 🎨❤️

Cowslip recently made an appearance at our Car & Bike Fest 2, where we secretly arranged a rather special surprise for Alan… that day, we brought the steam-powered reunion back! 🥹🔥

There were smiles, memories and, of course… plenty of SSSSSSSTEAM conversations! 💨😂

What a wonderful Wish Wednesday! ❤️
