The Joseph Rowntree Foundation in York has created a special report into the lives of dementia sufferers – one of many local enterprises which are helping the city to become a truly dementia-friendly community.

As part of the project, the foundation spent a year speaking to dementia sufferers and finding out ways in which their day-to-day lives could be improved in a practical way. With their findings now compiled into a report, it could prove a vital tool in helping people living with dementia in York and their families to enjoy a worry-free experience when out and about.

With the number of people diagnosed with dementia in the UK expected to increase to 1.5 million over the next thirty years, it is clear that something needs to be done to help those who will be reliant on dementia care facilities in the future.

Another initiative has been instigated by Fiona Andrews, with the police constable based in York campaigning for the city’s train station to review its signage and facilities, keeping the needs and views of dementia sufferers in mind.
